چکیده

Viral community structure and dynamics were investigated for the first time in surface waters (0–20m) of Lake Geneva over a 5-month period between July and November 2011. Abundances of autotrophic picoplankton, heterotrophic bacteria and virus-like particles determined using flow cytometry revealed their predominance during the summer months followed by a slight decrease in fall. Two groups of viruses could be discriminated, referred to as virus-like particles (VLP) group 1 and 2. The abundance of VLP1 correlated significantly with the bacterial abundance, while that of VLP2 correlated with both chlorophyll a and picocyanobacterial abundance suggesting a tight coupling between these viral groups and bacteria or phytoplankton. The abundance of cyanomyoviruses and cyanopodoviruses varied between 7.3 10ml 1 (July) to 1.2 10ml 1 (November) and 5.8 10ml 1 (July) to 2.2 10ml 1 (September), respectively. The abundance of the picocyanobacterial hosts was in concurrence with that of the cyanophages, being higher in late summer. Polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) of viral signature genes such as g20, g23, mcp, polB, psbA and psbD revealed a relatively high richness within these genes with their diversity increasing towards the summer months. The diversity of psbD was found to be particularly high and correlated with picocyanobacterial abundance suggesting that cyanophages may be directly responsible for a significant proportion of carbon fixation in Lake Geneva.

Temporal dynamics and decay of putatively allochthonous and autochthonous viral genotypes in contrasting freshwater lakes.

Aquatic viruses play important roles in the biogeochemistry and ecology of lacustrine ecosystems; however, their composition, dynamics, and interactions with viruses of terrestrial origin are less extensively studied. We used a viral shotgun metagenomic approach to elucidate candidate autochthonous (i.e., produced within the lake) and allochthonous (i.e., washed in from other habitats) viral ge...

Long-term study (1974–1998) of seasonal changes in the phytoplankton in Lake Geneva: a multi-table approach

Hutchinson showed that there are several characteristic patterns of seasonal changes in phytoplankton assemblages (Hutchinson, 1967). It is now widely recognized that succession patterns vary little from year to year and are usually similar in lakes, having analogous climatic conditions, morphometric characteristics and trophic status (Reynolds, 1984; Harris, 1986). The recurrent character of t...

A Threetrophic-level Model of Plankton Dynamics with Nutrient Recycling

A three-trophic-level model of plankton dynamics with instantaneous nutrient recycling is considered. The model consists of autotrophic phytoplankton, herbivorous zooplankton, carnivorous zooplankton and dissolved limiting nutrient. Conditions are derived such that one or more components of the populations tend to extinction. Persistence criteria for the model are also obtained. As well, the bi...

Maximum in the Middle: Nonlinear Response of Microbial Plankton to Ultraviolet Radiation and Phosphorus

The responses of heterotrophic microbial food webs (HMFW) to the joint action of abiotic stressors related to global change have been studied in an oligotrophic high-mountain lake. A 2×5 factorial design field experiment performed with large mesocosms for >2 months was used to quantify the dynamics of the entire HMFW (bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, ciliates, and viruses) after an expe...

Detection of cyprinid herpesvirus-3 DNA in lake plankton.

The disease caused by cyprinid herpesvirus-3 (CyHV-3) severely impacts the natural freshwater ecosystem and damages carp and koi farming, however, the pathway of CyHV-3 transmission remains unclear. It is possible that the virus adheres to plankton, which then facilitate viral movement and transmission, and therefore, it is hypothesised that plankton are involved in the disease dynamics. In thi...
